Male' Water and Sewerage Company Pvt. Ltd. (MWSC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to support the restoration of the Kaafu Atoll Rasfari Marine Protected Area. The Managing Director of MWSC, Abdul Matheen Mohamed, and Director General of EPA, Ibrahim Naeem, officiated the signing ceremony held aboard the research vessel, R.V. Thimaaveshi.
MWSC, through this collaboration, will provide crucial technical and logistical support to the EPA-led project, contributing essential resources to restore the coral ecosystem. The project focuses on rehabilitating over 2,800 square meters of the coral reef, a critical component of the Maldives' marine biodiversity, which was severely damaged by a ship-grounding incident in August 2021.
As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, MWSC will supply survey materials, assist in the procurement of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants for the R.V. Thimaaveshi vessel, and offer logistical support for restoration activities at Rasfari. Additionally, MWSC will facilitate transportation and provide bottled water for the field teams during the restoration work.
The signing of this MoU represents a significant milestone by MWSC’s efforts to safeguard the Maldives’ marine environments. The Rasfari restoration project will span five years, with immediate efforts focused on restoring the integrity of the reef. EPA will lead the restoration work, while MWSC will offer assistance through its expertise in infrastructure and logistics.
