MWSC has officially commenced physical works to establish a sewerage system in K. Maafushi, alongside the development of water and sewerage infrastructure in the island’s newly reclaimed area. The project was officially commenced by Minister of Construction, Housing & Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Managing Director of MWSC Abdulla Muthalib, Chairperson of MWSC Shamhooza Ahmed, MP for K. Maafushi Constituency Hussain Riza, K. Maafushi council president and vice president.

Under this project, main water and sewerage pipeline networks will be installed across the reclaimed area, including the provision of sewerage junctions and water meters to enable household service connections. The scope also includes the construction of pumping stations, installation of a sea outfall, and enhancement of the existing water system through additional RO plants and water storage tanks. To support sustainability, solar PV systems will also be integrated into the project.

Commissioned by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and executed by MWSC, the total value of this component stands at MVR 128.6 million.

In addition, the design and construction of a sewerage system for K. Maafushi was officially launched during the ceremony. Delivered under a Design and Build model, this project covers system design, installation of the main sewer network, construction of pumping stations, and provision of household connections, including sewerage junctions. The contract also includes post-completion maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure long-term operational reliability.

This second component, also awarded by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure to MWSC, carries a total value of MVR 186 million.

Upon completion, these projects will provide residents of the newly reclaimed area in K. Maafushi with reliable access to safe drinking water and efficient sewerage services, supporting improved living standards and sustainable island development.
