MWSC Launches “Irun Hakatha” Home Solar Programme in R. Dhuvaafaru

MWSC has officially launched the “Irun Hakatha" a Home Solar programme in R. Dhuvaafaru.

His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu attended the inauguration ceremony, highlighting the national importance of the initiative. The programme was officially inaugurated by the Mr. Adam Shareef Umar, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, together with MWSC Managing Director Mr. Abdul Matheen Mohamed.

The programme aims to promote the use of renewable energy in households, enabling residents to benefit from clean solar power while reducing electricity costs. MWSC targets 33 percent renewable energy generation in Dhuvaafaru by the end of 2026, reducing reliance on diesel-based power and lowering environmental impact.

As part of the first phase, solar PV systems will be installed in households under an installment-based payment model, with electricity billed through a net metering mechanism. Savings from reduced electricity bills will be applied toward recovering the cost of the installed PV systems, ensuring long-term benefits for households.

Residents interested in the programme may apply via www.irunhakatha.mwsc.com.mv, where further information is available.

R. Dhuvaafaru remains the only island in the Maldives where MWSC provides water, sewerage, electricity, and waste management services under an integrated service delivery model.
