Today marks the 31st anniversary of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC). MWSC was established on April 1, 1995, with the primary objective of addressing the critical challenges in water and sanitation services faced by the growing population of Male’. Its establishment represents a significant milestone in improving public health and contributing to the national development of the Maldives.
The company began operations with 60 employees, serving a population of 60,000. Since then, MWSC has expanded considerably. With a workforce of over 1,000 employees, the company now provides essential water and sewerage services to approximately 200,000 people—representing nearly 50% of the nation’s total population.
Today, MWSC is recognized as a successful and reputable institution, fully managed by Maldivians. In addition to Male’, the company delivers services to Villimalé, Hulhumalé, Gulhifalhu, Thilafushi, K. Maafushi, R. Dhuvaafaru, and HDh. Kulhudhuffushi. In R. Dhuvaafaru, MWSC’s operations extend beyond water and sewerage services to include electricity provision, waste management, and the supply of ice to the fishing community.
As MWSC celebrates its 31st anniversary, the company reflects on the many significant milestones it has achieved. In this regard, while the company’s initial water production capacity was 900 cubic meters per day and its storage capacity stood at 10,000 cubic meters, MWSC is now undertaking significant initiatives to strengthen water infrastructure and enhance water security across the Greater Malé region. These efforts are aimed at ensuring sustainable service delivery during periods of peak demand as well as in emergency situations.
Over the past year, two new Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants, each with a daily production capacity ranging from 750 to 1,000 tonnes, were installed at the Malé Operations Centre. Similarly, at the Hulhumalé Operations Centre, two RO plants with a capacity of 350 tonnes per day each were commissioned, along with an additional RO plant capable of producing 2,500 tonnes per day. As a result of these developments, the total water production capacity in the Greater Malé region has increased from 44,950 tonnes to 49,900 tonnes per day.
Furthermore, the construction of a 10,000-tonne water storage tank at the Hulhumalé Operations Centre has been completed and is now fully operational. This has increased the total water storage capacity across the Greater Malé region from 40,445 tonnes to 50,445 tonnes, representing an overall increase of 25%.
In addition, the project to interconnect the water networks of Malé and Hulhumalé via the Sinamalé Bridge has been completed and is currently in temporary operation. This interconnection enables the transfer of up to 60 cubic meters of water per hour between the two islands in either direction in the event of an emergency.
Moreover, to ensure the reliability of water and sewerage services across the islands where MWSC operates, a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant with a daily production capacity of 150 tonnes was installed and commissioned at the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Operations Centre. This has increased the island’s total daily water production capacity to 700 tonnes, representing a 27% increase compared to previous levels.
In addition, to provide sustainable and reliable electricity to residents and businesses in R. Dhuvaafaru, an additional generator set was installed and the main power grid was expanded. As a result, the island’s power generation capacity has increased to 4,268 kilowatts, reflecting a 16% growth in production capability.
As the company commemorates its 31st anniversary, significant enhancements have also been made over the past year to the MWSC mobile application and e-portal. These improvements, aligned with the “Maldives 2.0” initiative, aim to further digitalize the company’s services and deliver more convenient, accessible, and high-quality solutions to customers—bringing MWSC’s services closer to the people. As a result, customers can now conveniently pay bills, request services, and monitor their billing history and water consumption through a single digital platform—accessible anytime and from anywhere. In addition to these digital enhancements, the company is preparing to introduce new prepaid and smart metering services.
MWSC continues to play a vital role in the development of water and sewerage systems across islands in the Maldives. To date, the company has successfully completed 111 water and sewerage projects nationwide. By 2024, infrastructure development had been completed on four islands. More recently, MWSC signed agreements with the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure to undertake seven additional projects aimed at establishing systems in six more islands. Physical work has already commenced on some of these projects, while preparations are underway to initiate work on the remaining sites.
Although the company was originally established as a utility provider specializing in water and sewerage services, its 31 years of experience have transformed MWSC into a leading organization with capabilities spanning engineering, trading, and manufacturing. Today, MWSC is actively engaged in the design, development, and operation of water and sewerage systems, as well as the in-house design and fabrication of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants. In addition, the MWSC showroom offers customers access to globally recognized brands related to water and sanitation systems. The company’s laboratory, accredited to ISO 17025:2005 standards, also provides commercial water testing services to a wide range of clients, including resorts and technical consultants.
MWSC is also making significant progress in the manufacturing sector. This includes the production of bottled water at its facility in Hulhumalé, as well as the manufacture of pipes in various sizes for water and sewerage systems, in addition to electrical conduits, at its dedicated pipe manufacturing facility in K. Gulhifalhu.
MWSC stands as a proud and successful organization that has contributed positively to public health and improved the well-being of the Maldivian people. The company acknowledges the tireless efforts and dedication of its employees in ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of water and sewerage services, as well as in driving its continued growth. MWSC extends its sincere appreciation and gratitude to all staff members for their commitment and service. Additionally, we take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for the trust and loyalty they have shown towards the company.
MWSC remains committed to delivering sustainable services and ensuring that its solutions are convenient, accessible, and responsive to the needs of the public.
